An argument recorded during the afternoon session

Three accounts of the same observation

The upstream transducer registered two arrivals. The station's slow gauge remained above its alarm threshold without interruption. The collector returned one sealed sample. All three instruments had worked as specified.

The shared bench

The south gate was opened twice during a trial. Both openings drove brief signals through the same line; the second was weaker than the first. The committee had previously used the word event for three distinct operations: counting maxima in a pressure record, counting continuous intervals above an alarm threshold and sealing whatever the collector received in one sampling period.

The trial was not held to decide whether two gate commands had been sent. Their number was known in the control room. The disagreement concerned what downstream event the certified instruments were entitled to report.

A signal with more than one legitimate count

The pulse train has peaks at 0.80 and 1.18 seconds, with relative amplitudes 1 and 0.82. The direct detector reads the constructed signal. The slow gauge has a single-pole response whose time constant you can change. Both use an identical threshold of 0.24 normalized units to count continuous exceedance intervals.

Statement of the recording officer

Dr. Ada Torin

Wide-band transducer / direct channel
Reported eventsTwo
The record contains two maxima above our reporting threshold. Each falls below that threshold before the other begins. I therefore reported two arrivals.

Torin's report identifies the number of separated threshold crossings in a chosen measurement band. It is sensitive to both sampling rate and threshold. It need not say whether the line transported two independent objects or whether the two valve openings generated one extended disturbance.

Objection from the station engineer

M. Valev

Slow integrating gauge / τ = 0.40 s
Reported eventsOne
Our gauge entered the danger interval only once. An operator instructed to close the gate after the third event would be given a different instruction by the transducer, even though both were connected to the same line.

Valev's instrument averages away a gap shorter than its response time. The engineering threshold is a specified condition on the gauge output. Replacing that instrument would alter the event count without changing the trial. Valev objects to revising the station alarm standard by calling one reading more fundamental.

III

Evidence from the collecting laboratory

Dr. Nessa Hiru

One sealed collector / no temporal resolution
Reported eventsUndetermined
The sample establishes what was transported during the interval. It does not retain the order of arrival. There is no honest number of events in this record.

The collector sums the two contributions. Its quantity is informative, but any decomposition into events requires external information. Hiru rejects both previous counts as answers to her laboratory's question and asks the clerk to remove event count from the collector column.

Debate / Closing minutes

The clerk's amendment

Chair

We can record the number of commands as two, the number of direct exceedances as two and the gauge alarm as one. Is there an objection to retaining a single column for event count?

Hiru

Yes. A common column would conceal which operation produced the entry. The collector did not count anything.

Torin

Then the legal limit must name the detector. A threshold without a bandwidth is only a direction to argue later.

Valev

And it must name the consequence. The barrier was designed for sustained load. Our warning was not intended to enumerate valve motions.

Clerk

The proposal to strike the unqualified event-count column carried. All three reports remain in the record.
