Notice of withdrawal

We withdraw the principal inference of Arendt et al. (2062) that phase agreement between geographically separated Pelagic Array stations demonstrates persistent coherence in the monitored marine medium. The reported agreement depended on a mistaken assumption about the independence of the stations’ timing references. In retrospective analysis, signals previously treated as locally generated were found to inherit a common correction from the network's environmental time-transfer model.

The stations' agreement had originally been presented as independent confirmation of long-range coherence. Subsequent examination showed that several instruments applied the same environmental correction. Replications made with the same calibration architecture reproduced the error.

What survived the correction

We retain the recorded episodes of unusual station agreement. We no longer interpret them as evidence for a new physical coupling. A smaller, unresolved variation at the shortest separations remains under investigation, but the data do not justify extrapolation to the earlier long-range claim. The proposed theory of pelagic coherence therefore loses its central empirical support.

LETTER / 2078* · FROM THE METROLOGY GROUP

“The clocks are not independent witnesses.”

“The phase reference applied at Station Nine was derived from the same environmental correction that enters Station Four. The coincidence between their residuals has therefore been treated twice as evidence: once as a station measurement and again as an apparently independent replication.”

— T. Ismail, technical memorandum 17
REPLY / 2080* · FROM THE ORIGINAL COLLABORATION

“Agreement remains after correction, but its meaning has changed.”

“Removing shared timing components reduces the amplitude of the long-range feature. Whether the remaining signal reflects station geometry or an unmodeled medium cannot yet be decided. We request that the theoretical interpretation be suspended pending a complete reprocessing.”

— Pelagic Array working group

Editorial note

The case turns on apparently independent instruments that shared a calibration model.
